Alfalfa & Forage Legumes
Arrow Seed has been the leading independent supplier of alfalfa seeds in the region since 1954. Our commitment to bringing the best in alfalfa genetics to our customers requires ongoing evaluation of new varieties. Improvements in alfalfa genetics we are evaluating may include salt tolerance, drought tolerance, branch rooting, deeper set crowns, faster regrowth, and the Roundup Ready trait. The Arrow Seed Company introduced its first true hybrid alfalfa - Journey Brand 204 Hybrid Alfalfa in 2002. A strong inventory of many other forage legumes such as clovers, trefoil, sweetclover, vetch, and forage peas positions Arrow Seed as a primary source for those seeds. Browse the list below for more information about some of the legumes we offer.

Journey 204 Hybrid Alfalfa

JOURNEY Brand 204 Hybrid Alfalfa is like a thoroughbred -  fast out of the ground and fast to re-grow between cuttings. JOURNEY 204 expresses its greatest forage yield advantage in more aggressive harvest regimes. JOURNEY 204 strengths include its excellent forage yield capabilities, high forage quality, distinctive rapid re-growth after harvest, excellent winter survival abilities and solid persistence. JOURNEY 204 has shown very good dryland performance.

Curtis Kalkowski, A&C Ranch in Verdel, NE has this to say about Journey 204:    "We planted Journey 204 on 12 acres dryland creek bottom ground in May 2005. Harvest was limited first year.  In 2006 Journey was the first field harvested and the re-growth was excellent.  Much better than other varieties we have planted.  We ended up with four cuttings this year.  All the bales were weighed and sold.  The field averaged 6.39 ton per acre.  We will be planting more Journey 204 in 2007.

Enhancer Alfalfa
ENHANCER is a proven high forage yielding, persistent alfalfa. Enhancer’s forage yield performance is first ,or statistically equal to the first place entry, in 53 out of 59 university trials. Enhancers’s forage quality capabilities are as good as, or better than, most alfalfas on the market. For the serious forage producer, Enhancer is the alfalfa variety of choice. It is a fall dormancy 4 alfalfa that will persist well into 4th and 5th production years. In the University of Wisconsin summary, Enhancer was 115% of the test average across 31 site test years.

FSG 408DP Alfalfa
FSG 408DP Alfalfa has been bred for deep set crowns with 61% of the crowns 1 inch to 1 ½ inches below the soil surface. The deep set crown trait helps insulate the crown in severe winter weather and protect the crowns from animal and equipment traffic. This versatile variety is ideal for 3 to 4 cut management systems where wheel traffic is a concern, or for intensive livestock grazing year after year. With high hay yields, great forage quality, and an excellent disease and insect resistance package, FSG 408DP gives you the flexibility to optimize your management decisions.  FSG 408DP performed very near the top in the Lancaster County and Scottsbluff County.

Aquamate Alfalfa
AquaMate alfalfa is a branch rooted, high forage yielding, winter hardy variety designed for  poorly drained soils. Its root system has been genetically designed with a greater degree of the branched rooted trait. This trait helps keep more of the root system above the water table and better secures the plant in the ground when freezing and thawing occurs. The branch rooted trait will adjust as moisture stresses intensify. AquaMate would be a good companion alfalfa to a highly productive tap rooted variety.

Big Red Alfalfa
BIG RED 3 rolls out bales like the Nebraska offense rolls out yards. BIG RED 3 is a blend of good yielding, winterhardy alfalfa varieties with good forage quality. BIG RED 3 is a very persistent blend with a solid disease resistance base, which provides solid protection in adverse environments. This fall dormancy 3 blend will persist for five or more years under normal harvest management and production conditions. BIG RED 4 rolls out bales faster than the Nebraska offense rolls out yards. BIG RED 4 is a blend of very high yielding, winter-hardy alfalfa varieties with good forage quality. BIG RED 4 is a very persistent blend with a solid disease resistance base, which provides solid protection in adverse environments. This fall dormancy 4 blend will persist well into five productive years. The Alfalfa Championship Series ranks this top alfalfa blend as a big winner.

Perry Alfalfa
Winterhardy cultivar adapted for forage production in the north central U.S. Forage yield is equal or superior to Dawson, and Vernal.

Ranger Alfalfa
Winterhardy cultivar adapted to a wide areas of U.S. and Canada. It was the first available improved alfalfa cultivar.

Vernal Alfalfa
Winterhardy cultivar adapted for use in the North Central U.S. with moderate regrowth and fine stems.

Travois Alfalfa
Winterhardy cultivar adapted for use in the North Central states and adjacent area with low (decumbent) growth, and aggressive root spread. Travois has the ability to produce stem buds on laterally spreading roots.

Wrangler Alfalfa
Winterhardy cultivar adapted for use in the North Central states and adjacent area.

Pinnacle Ladino Clover
Pinnacle is a new ladino clover variety developed for today’s high performance pasture needs. Look for excellent establishment and seeding vigor along with cool season productivity and the aggressive season long growth necessary to maximize grazing. Pinnacle has a very upright growth habit with numerous fine stems and large dark green leaves. This variety was bred for superior persistence and can stand up to leaf disease and virus pressure. Pinnacle is adapted throughout the United States and Canada, wherever ladino clovers are grown.
